Call screening on iPhone and Android: is it good for trades?

Call screening can cut spam, but nearly every new customer rings from a number you haven't saved. Here's what callers hear, and how to set screening up so it doesn't cost you work.

Call screening can work for tradespeople, but only in its "ask the caller" form. iPhone's Ask Reason for Calling and Pixel's Call Screen ask unknown callers who they are and why they're calling, then let you decide. Settings that silence unknown numbers send new customers to voicemail without your phone ringing, so avoid those on a work phone.

What does call screening do on iPhone?

On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Apple gives three choices (Apple Support):

  • Never: calls from unsaved numbers ring like any other call.
  • Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is asked why they're calling before your phone rings. Apple says your iPhone then rings and shares their response so you can decide whether to pick up (Apple iPhone User Guide).
  • Silence: calls from unsaved numbers are silenced and sent to voicemail.

Apple lists some limits. Calls aren't screened while you're roaming. Call screening turns off for 24 hours if you call the emergency services. Standard calling and data rates may apply. On software older than iOS 17, Live Voicemail also has to be on.

What does Call Screen do on Android?

Google's Call Screen is a Pixel feature. Google says automatic screening works on Pixel phones in the UK, and so does manual screening (Pixel Phone Help). Manual Call Screen needs a SIM from a country where the feature is available.

  • Automatic: you choose which callers get screened, for example spam, possibly faked numbers or first-time callers. If the call looks like spam, the phone hangs up. If it doesn't, your phone rings and shows how the caller replied.
  • Manual: when a call comes in, tap Screen call. You see a live transcript and can pick a reply, answer, or hang up.

Two limits matter in a van. Google says Call Screen won't screen calls automatically while you're roaming, and that it might not screen automatically if you're using headphones or your phone is connected to Bluetooth, depending on the model. So don't assume screening is on just because you switched it on.

Other Android phones have their own versions, and the menus differ by maker. Check your phone maker's help pages for the exact settings.

What do callers hear when you screen them?

On both systems an automated voice answers and asks who's calling and why. On iPhone, Siri speaks in your phone's default language. On a Pixel, Google lists replies you can send with a tap, including "Is it urgent?", which asks "Do you need to get hold of them urgently?", and "I'll call you back", which tells the caller "They can't talk right now, but they'll give you a call later."

For a customer with water coming through the ceiling, that's an extra step before they reach you. Some will answer the question. Some will hang up and ring the next tradesperson. Nobody can tell you the split for your callers, so test it: ask a friend to ring from a number you haven't saved and listen to what happens.

What do people who use call screening say?

The trade-off shows up in what users write online. On the MacRumors forums, one iPhone owner said his wife "uses her iPhone for business calls … so she has it turned off. She gets her business calls.... and lots of spam/scam calls too" (MacRumors, Screen Unknown Callers thread). On Reddit, an iPhone user who switched from Silence to screening found it "seems to just send any and all callers through to me, including spam calls" (r/iphone, October 2025).

That's how Ask Reason for Calling is meant to work: callers who give a reason still ring through, with a transcript so you can decide. For trades that's the useful part. The risk is the genuine caller who doesn't wait to be asked.

Which screening settings can cost you jobs?

  • Silence on iPhone. New customers aren't in your contacts, so their calls go straight to voicemail. This is a common cause of calls going straight to voicemail.
  • Filtering Unknown Callers on iPhone. With Call Filtering > Unknown Callers on, Apple moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into a separate Unknown Callers list. Missed enquiries are easy to overlook there. If you use it, check that list every day.
  • Pixel automatic screening with diverts. Google says that if you use call forwarding, you shouldn't use automatic call screening, because screened calls won't be forwarded. That matters if you divert unanswered calls to voicemail, a colleague or a text-back service.
  • Take a Message on Pixel. Google's Take a Message answers calls you miss or decline, plays a greeting and records a message. Google says that if your network's conditional call forwarding doesn't work with it, you should turn Take a Message off (Phone app Help). If you rely on a divert, test it with Take a Message on.

How should a tradesperson set up call screening?

A sensible set-up for a work phone:

  1. On iPhone, choose Ask Reason for Calling or Never, not Silence.
  2. Save regular customers, suppliers and merchants to Contacts so they ring straight through. Both Apple and Google say saved contacts aren't screened.
  3. If you divert missed calls, test whether screening interferes. On a Pixel, Google's advice is not to combine automatic screening with call forwarding.
  4. Turn on spam filtering separately. On iPhone, turn on the spam filter under Call Filtering. Flagged calls then show in a Spam list in the Phone app.
  5. Check your missed calls, Unknown Callers and Spam lists at each break.

If you'd rather keep work calls apart from personal ones, a second phone number for your business lets you screen your personal line hard and leave the work number open.

Does screening replace voicemail or a text back?

No. Screening decides whether your phone rings. It doesn't help when you can't answer at all, such as up a ladder or on another call. For those calls you still need voicemail (see UK voicemail numbers by network) and a quick reply. Our missed call text templates and guide to missed calls on the tools cover that part, and missed-call rescue shows how TradiesMate handles the calls you divert.

Key takeaways

  • Use Ask Reason for Calling or Never on a work iPhone. Silence sends new customers to voicemail.
  • Pixel Call Screen works in the UK, both automatic and manual, but not automatically while roaming.
  • Google says not to combine automatic Call Screen with call forwarding, because screened calls won't be forwarded.
  • iPhone's Unknown Callers filter moves missed calls into a separate list. Check it daily if you use it.
  • Test what a new caller hears by ringing yourself from an unsaved number.

Questions

Is iPhone call screening available in the UK?

Yes. On a UK iPhone you'll find Screen Unknown Callers under Settings > Apps > Phone. Apple says calls aren't screened while you're roaming.

Does Google Call Screen work in the UK?

Yes. Google lists the UK for both automatic and manual Call Screen on Pixel phones. Manual screening needs a SIM from a supported country.

Will call screening stop me getting new customers?

It can. Silencing unknown callers sends them to voicemail, and some callers hang up rather than answer a screening question. Ask Reason for Calling is gentler, but test it before relying on it.

Can I use call screening with call divert?

Test it first. Google says not to use automatic Call Screen with call forwarding, because screened calls won't be forwarded.
